The last time I dressed traditional salmon flies was about thirty years ago and I now find I am a bit rusty. Some of my new efforts are flawed but I decided to include a few samples on this page with an explanation of what went wrong and how to avoid pitfalls.

I have used some blind hooks which include antique hooks by Hutchinson of Kendal. I have also obtained some modern versions of Pryce Tannatt's Rational Series (B and C).

Many bird species are protected so I have had to use substitutes or even omit some materials.

Traditionally a loop of silkworm gut was whipped onto the hook to form an eye. Not having any gut I have used nylon monofilament. There is a web site which gives instructs how to make artificial twisted gut from monofilament; I have had no success trying this method. If anybody wishes to try this recipe Click here

I will add some more flies over the following months, hopefully with fewer flaws.
